The Wisconsin men's tennis team ended a two-match weekend with a split record. The Badgers won at home on Friday and then lost a tight contest in Tennessee on Saturday.
Wisconsin defeated Pennsylvania 6-1 at Nielsen Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. The Quakers held a 4-7 record, and Wisconsin had never beaten them in program history prior to this match. The previous meeting ended in a 4-3 loss for the Badgers. Josef Dodridge and Osgar O'Hoisin won the doubles point 6-1. Daniel Soyfer and Chase Colton added a second doubles win 6-2. In singles, Colton, Soyfer, Dodridge, and Jesper Freimuth all won in straight sets. O'Hoisin took three sets to finish the sweep 7-5, 4-6, 10-2.
The team traveled to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on Saturday to face Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders entered the match with a 10-2 record and had not lost at home this season. Wisconsin took the initial doubles point when O'Hoisin and Dodridge beat Chris Edge and Tom Moonen 6-4. Chema Carranza and Freimuth won the second doubles match 6-2 to secure the point. Soyfer won his singles match 6-4, 6-3 to reach 10-0 in singles for the season.
Middle Tennessee State won the next three singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. Dodridge tied the match at 3-3 with a 7-6, 6-1 victory. The final point came down to Carranza against Tom Moonen. Carranza dropped the first set 7-6 in a tiebreak. He won the second set 6-1. In the deciding set, Carranza led 5-4. Moonen won the final three points to take the set 7-5 and the match for Middle Tennessee State.
Wisconsin head coach Danny Westerman noted the difficulty of the loss. "This one stings. We need to keep working. We put ourselves in these situations so we can eventually get over the hump," he told UWBadgers.com. The Badgers are now 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten. They remain without a road win this season.
Wisconsin returns to Nielsen Tennis Center next weekend. The team is scheduled for a Sunday doubleheader against Cornell and UW-Green Bay.
