Wisconsin women's tennis has reached a 6-0 start, marking the program's strongest opening sequence since 1992. This achievement was secured on Saturday when the Badgers defeated both Bradley and Green Bay with identical 7-0 scores in a doubleheader format. The dominance displayed in these matches signals a level of consistency that had not been seen in the program for over three decades.
The second match against Green Bay featured a significant disparity in squad availability. The visitors fielded only five players, a number that made it difficult to keep pace with the Badgers throughout the day. Despite the reduced lineup for Green Bay, Wisconsin's performance was not reliant on the opponent's absence, as they had already established control in their earlier contest with Bradley.
The foundation for the day's success was laid during the doubles portion of the competition. Freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau opened the scoring with a 6-1 victory over Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski. Following that, sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle sealed the doubles session with a 6-0 win against Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen. This early advantage set a tone that the singles players maintained without interruption.
In the singles matches, Wisconsin did not drop a single set across the board. Lexi Keberle, playing at first singles, defeated Tebon in straight sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Keberle now boasts a combined 7-0 record in both singles and doubles, making her a standout performer in the team's unbeaten run.
The momentum continued as MaryAnn Rompf took the second singles match against Piaskowski with a 6-3, 6-1 score. Michelle Linden contributed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles against Sterre Tijssens, while Melissa Pick shut out Maria Neff 6-0, 6-0. The day concluded with Christina Zordani defeating Samm Pedersen 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles, improving her personal season record to 5-0.
Head coach Kelcy McKenna attributed the team's success to its focus on controllable factors rather than just the final score. She highlighted the players' attitude, effort, and energy as the primary drivers of their performance. McKenna emphasized that these three elements are critical to sustaining the team's success throughout the competitive schedule.
Looking forward, McKenna stated that the team must continue to focus on the details in practice and daily drills. The goal is to ensure readiness for the National Indoors and the remainder of the spring season. She noted that the team needs to maintain its high standards in match simulations to keep its competitive edge sharp.
Despite the perfect record, the coach identified specific areas for improvement, particularly in doubles play. McKenna pointed to the need for better serves and returns, as well as a more aggressive approach during service plays. She stressed the importance of carrying the momentum from a doubles point into the singles matches, ensuring the team remains gritty and avoids giving away free points.
The Badgers will have the opportunity to extend their unbeaten streak when they host the National Team Indoor Championship. This event is scheduled for February 9 through 12. The team aims to use its current form to compete strongly in this upcoming indoor competition.
