Ukraine is preparing a major humanitarian push into Oleshky, a town currently under Russian control in the Kherson region, with a specific date now set for the operation.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the nation on October 24, stating that arrangements for the area should be implemented shortly. He painted a grim picture of the conditions on the ground, noting that Russian forces have mined the roads within the temporarily occupied portion of the Kherson region. "The situation is dire, extremely dire," Zelenskyy said. Kyiv's objective is to launch a humanitarian effort that will reopen access to the town, supply food and medicine, and facilitate the departure of residents from the combat zone.

Discussions regarding this access have been ongoing for some time across various levels of government. "Ukraine will do its part. We count on American mediation to work," Zelenskyy noted. This diplomatic effort has moved quickly in recent days. On the evening of October 23, the general staffs of both Ukraine and Russia announced that a ceasefire would commence in a designated area starting the night of October 27. This pause in fighting is specifically intended to allow the humanitarian operation in Oleshky to proceed.

Further details emerged shortly after. The White House released a statement asserting that US First Lady Melania Trump had secured a truce between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, characterizing the situation there as a humanitarian disaster currently unfolding. Moscow confirmed the arrangement, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia had agreed to a ceasefire so that a humanitarian mission could move forward in the town.

Ukrainian officials have established a timeline for these actions. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, announced that the humanitarian operation in Oleshky is scheduled for October 29, during which a ceasefire will be in effect. This date follows the initial ceasefire period set to begin on October 27.
