A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after attempting to rescue her two sons from a strong current. The incident occurred while the family was snorkeling near the southern point of Bimini, an island in the archipelago.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that officers opened an investigation into the sudden death. The woman is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. Police stated that a powerful current initially carried both boys away. The mother was subsequently swept from the water as she tried to swim toward her children. The boys were recovered from the water later.
Shortly after 10 a.m., officers at the Alice Town police station received a report that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police traveled to the location and found that she had already been transported to a local clinic for medical care. A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts.
Authorities noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after the woman was pulled from the water. The police force said foul play is not suspected at this stage. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The Royal Bahamas Police Force posted the preliminary account of the events on social media.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family. The spokesperson offered condolences to the family of the deceased. The investigation remains active as police gather further details regarding the incident.
