The college basketball season began on Sunday, November 2, with the No. 1 Florida Gators taking on the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes in Tampa.
This contest is the only ranked matchup on the schedule for the day. While many other games feature large betting spreads, such as Texas facing Chicago State with a 41.5 point handicap, the Florida and Miami game offers a closer competitive balance.
Miami enters the season ranked 14th in the country. The Hurricanes are working to integrate new players with their existing core. Returning scorers include Malik Reneau, who led the team in scoring last year, along with Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen.
Henderson is entering his second year and is expected to provide outside shooting. Allen will likely serve as a playmaker and occasional scorer. The roster also features two new additions: point guard Acaden Lewis from Villanova and rim protector Somto Cyril.
Lewis arrives from a high-quality program, though Villanova did not have a strong season last year. Cyril is expected to anchor the paint and act as a pass target. Coaches will need to determine how Reneau and Cyril share space near the basket, as both players can congest the area.
Florida holds the No. 1 ranking in the nation. This position is supported by the return of key starters and the team's recent history, which includes a national championship win in the past few years.
Boogie Fland is back for another season, having shot nearly 45% from the field last year. Alex Condon returns to handle interior defensive responsibilities. Urban Klavzar, the SEC Sixth Man of the Year last season, joins the starting lineup as an outside shooter.
The Gators also benefit from depth on their bench. Thomas Haugh, considered the team's best player, decided to return for another year rather than entering the NBA draft. The group has played together for several years, giving them familiarity with the game plan and plays.
The game is being played at a neutral site in Tampa. Because it is the first game of the season in an unfamiliar arena, the under is considered a logical betting option. However, Florida is favored by 5.5 points, a spread that reflects the Gators' depth and experience advantage.
The matchup pits the established chemistry of the top-ranked Gators against the Hurricanes' effort to blend new transfers with their returning stars in their first regular-season game.
