A family in Waukegan, Illinois, discovered foreign objects in their daughter's Halloween candy on October 31, prompting a police investigation.
Waukegan police received the report at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31. Officers met the child's mother at a residence in the 3000 block of Grandville Street to review the items.
The mother stated that her 9-year-old daughter noticed a magnet adhering to some of the treats while trick-or-treating. The girl had previously viewed a video demonstrating how to check candy for metal. Upon returning home, the mother inspected the collection and identified sewing needles, bobby pins, copper wire, plastic fragments, and a gold nail inside several pieces of chocolate.
The family collected the candy from neighborhoods near Flossmoor Avenue, Leith Avenue, and Ridgeland Avenue. They also visited homes along Brookside Avenue, Lynn Terrace, and Flossmoor Avenue near Waukegan High School. The family could not determine which specific households provided the affected items.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division collected the candy and objects as evidence. Police stated they have not identified any suspects and have received no other reports of similar incidents in the area.
