Greenville, Mississippi, experienced a sudden industrial incident on Wednesday morning when a chemical facility suffered an explosion. The event triggered a rapid emergency response across Washington County.
Crews arrived at the Loveland facility, formerly known as Platte Chemical, shortly after 7 a.m. to address the initial blast. The explosion involved a chemical herbicide stored in a unit described as a hot box. Thick smoke billowed from the site, prompting officials to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel worked to contain the flames upon arrival. They followed decontamination protocols to manage potential exposure to chemical agents. Multiple agencies coordinated their efforts at the scene.
Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons addressed the public regarding the swift coordination of local and state responders. “Our first priority is the safety of our residents, our first responders, and everyone working at or near the facility,” Simmons said. He urged citizens to remain calm and avoid the immediate area to allow workers to operate safely.
Officials later confirmed that no injuries were reported in the explosion. They lifted the shelter-in-place order as the situation stabilized. The cause of the blast is currently under investigation.
