Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday. President of basketball operations Tim Connelly stated Wednesday that the team expects Edwards to recover fully from the procedure.

Edwards has been managing pain in his right knee since the previous spring. He played in a career-low 61 games last season. In the first round of the playoffs, he hyperextended his left knee, resulting in a deep bone bruise that kept him out for two games. The issue in his right knee returned early this season.

During Sunday’s home opener, Edwards grabbed his knee and grimaced. He played Monday against Cleveland despite being listed as questionable. He scored 47 points in an overtime loss. His total of 133 points through four games is a franchise record. An MRI taken Tuesday revealed new damage not present in scans taken before training camp or during the playoffs.

Connelly noted that Edwards’ condition over the summer did not require surgery. The team now seeks a clearer timeline for his return, which could range from weeks to months. Connelly said Edwards agreed to the operation reluctantly but handled the news well.

“He wants to play tonight. He looked pretty good the other night, having the 47,” Connelly said. “We’re just concerned about his long-term health. We want to make sure we’re putting him in the best position he can be so he can be the best version he’s going to be for a long time.” Connelly added that Edwards told his teammates, “You guys got it.”

The Timberwolves are also without guard Donte DiVincenzo, who tore his right Achilles tendon in the same playoff game where Edwards injured his left knee. The acquisition of LaMelo Ball has reshaped the lineup, moving Edwards to his natural shooting guard position. The team has depth in the backcourt to cover Edwards’ absence.

Reserves Ayo Dosunmu and Terrence Shannon Jr. have played off the bench this season. One of them is expected to start while Edwards recovers. Bones Hyland will also see an increased role. Hyland acknowledged the difficulty of replacing Edwards but emphasized the team’s ability to adapt.

“We know he brings dynamic scoring, leadership. Tough to fill in his shoes, just from what he does on the floor for us. Nobody can be like Ant, but we’ve got players who can step in and just take over a game as well,” Hyland said. “Just play team basketball.”
