Musk details robot training program and 20,000 unit weekly target
Tesla confirmed its Fremont facility now produces commercial Optimus units, with an internal academy designed to accelerate AI learning through high volume practice.

Tesla has begun manufacturing Optimus robots on a high volume production line at its Fremont, California factory.
The company stated in its third quarter shareholder letter that these units represent the first production quality models ever made. Tesla noted that the current manufacturing process has been proven suitable for commercial products.
The assembly line occupies space previously used for Model S and Model X vehicles. Tesla cleared the old car equipment in 46 days to prepare the area for robot production. The facility is sized for an annual capacity of one million units. Elon Musk said on Wednesday's earnings call that most of the necessary equipment is already installed. He expects weekly output to climb toward 20,000 robots as the line ramps up.
Musk described the growth trajectory as a shallow initial slope of a classic S curve. The engineering team is currently refining the robot's AI, electromechanical design, and reliability. Tesla plans to finish this development work by the end of next year. At that point, the company intends to deliver Optimus units to outside firms for dangerous and repetitive tasks.
A key challenge for the robot program is the lack of a large fleet to generate training data. Unlike the automotive division, which relies on millions of vehicles to send real world driving data back to engineers, Optimus does not have a comparable user base yet. Musk acknowledged this disparity during the earnings call. He explained that the vast fleet of cars does not exist for the humanoid project.
Tesla's solution is a dedicated training environment called the Optimus Academy. This system will use 10,000 to 20,000 robots to practice a wide range of tasks. The data generated by these practice sessions will feed into the next version of the AI model. Every unit produced on the Fremont line will serve as a source for this training data.
Hardware upgrades are also scheduled for the coming year. Tesla plans to integrate its AI5 chip into the Optimus design. Musk said a new video showing the robot completing tasks driven by AI rather than preprogrammed motions will be released within one or two months. He criticized rival humanoid demonstrations for relying on scripted routines that may not perform well in real world conditions.
