Liverpool and Porto face critical fixtures Wednesday night as the UEFA Champions League league phase reaches its midpoint. Liverpool, who have scored 12 goals in their first three group stage matches, are looking to translate their European form into their domestic campaign, where they have managed just 11 goals in nine Premier League games.
The Reds' inconsistency is evident in their underlying numbers. In the Premier League, they rank 11th for expected goals and lead Europe's top five leagues for blocked shots at a rate of 37.9%. Their attacking output relies heavily on long-range efforts, with just under 40% of shots taken from outside the box. In contrast, their Champions League performance has been more efficient, with 12 goals coming from 7.23 expected goals, aided by favorable matchups against LASK and Villarreal.
Manager Andoni Iraola has fielded a high-profile front line including Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz, and Dominik Szoboszlai. Despite the investment, the team has yet to find consistent rhythm in England. In Europe, however, their scoring has been prolific, suggesting the squad can perform at a high level when the opposition is less defensive. The upcoming match in Istanbul will test whether this European efficiency can become a regular feature.
Porto enters the match against Napoli in 35th place, having earned points in only one of their first three games. A loss tonight would likely end their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages, as the cut line is projected to be around nine points. Porto has struggled to create volume, managing just 30 shots worth 2.7 expected goals in their first three matches combined.
Strikers Samu Aghehowa and Andre Silva have taken only four shots between them, while midfielder Gabri Veiga has five. This low volume contrasts with their domestic performance, where they average nearly that number of shots per game. Manager Francesco Farioli acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "The demands and the details make all the difference. Being effective at every moment is important."
Borussia Dortmund hosts Real Betis in another high-stakes encounter. Serhou Guirassy, who has scored 23 goals in 31 Champions League appearances, is set to face his former club. Guirassy has found success against Spanish teams, including a hat trick against Barcelona in 2025. Real Betis, currently on a perfect 100% record, has allowed 2.5 expected goals against in their first three matches, making them vulnerable to a direct attack.
Other matches on the schedule include Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Manchester City. The league phase concludes next month, with top teams qualifying for the knockout rounds. Porto must win to keep their campaign alive, while Liverpool looks to close the gap between their domestic and European performances.
