The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable smartphone, is now available, but users must spend an additional $249 on third-party or Apple-branded gear to access specific core functions. The cost covers essential add-ons for stylus input, rapid battery replenishment, and integrated smart home monitoring.
The $249 total derives from three primary items recommended for a complete setup. The first is the Apple Pencil (USB-C), priced at $69, which enables writing on both the inner and outer displays. The second is a high-wattage power adapter to utilize the phone’s fast charging speed. The third consists of two HomeKit-compatible security cameras, with a combined cost of $108 for the recommended models.
Apple Pencil support marks a new feature for the iPhone lineup. The update arrives in iOS 27.2 next week, allowing users to take notes and sketch on the device. Apple stated the design references the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. Only the USB-C version of the pencil is compatible with the new hardware.
Fast charging performance relies on specific hardware. The iPhone Duo can reach 50 percent battery in approximately 20 minutes, but only when paired with a suitable power adapter. The device ships with a USB-C cable but lacks a charger in the box. While many users may possess 20W adapters, the recommended options include Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max at $34, or Anker’s 100W USB-C charger at $29.
The StandBy mode upgrade allows the phone to display security camera feeds while standing upright, even if not charging. This feature specifically supports Home Camera and Home Modular views for smart home accessories. Two recommended HomeKit-compatible devices are the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and a eufy 4K camera at $69. These cameras allow users to monitor their property at a glance from the phone’s screen.
Additional accessories round out the potential expenses for new owners. ESR’s MagSafe Car Mount is available for $19, down from $29, and holds the phone magnetically for navigation. Case options range from the $29 SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand to Apple’s $129 iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand. AirPods Pro 3 are also listed as a complementary purchase, currently available for $199 after a discount from $249.
The iPhone Duo launch includes these hardware dependencies for users seeking the full range of new capabilities. The accessory ecosystem provides the necessary tools to leverage the device’s larger display and updated software features.
