The Internal Revenue Service raised federal income tax thresholds for the 2027 tax year, effectively increasing the income levels required to reach higher tax rates. For single filers, the 10% bracket now covers earnings up to $12,800, while the 37% top rate applies to taxable income exceeding $661,375. Married couples filing jointly face a top-bracket threshold of $793,650.
These adjustments shift the burden for many households by allowing them to keep more of their earnings before tax rates increase. The standard deduction for single filers rises to $16,600 in 2027, up from $16,100 in 2026. Married couples filing jointly will see their standard deduction increase to $33,200, a gain of $1,000 from the previous year. Taxable income is determined by subtracting these deductions from adjusted gross income.
The agency’s announcement on Thursday included updates to other key provisions. The long-term capital gains brackets, the estate and gift tax exemption, and eligibility thresholds for the earned income tax credit all increased. The IRS calculates these annual adjustments based on changes in the consumer price index to account for inflation.
The timing of the increase comes as Americans face higher costs for housing, groceries, and gasoline. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in October that the consumer price index climbed 3.7% in September 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier. This represented a slight acceleration from the 3.4% annual pace recorded in August.
The federal tax system maintains seven income tiers for 2027, with rates ranging from 10% to 37%. Taxpayers pay different rates on each band of income rather than a single flat rate on total earnings. The specific bracket applied depends on the filing status selected on the tax return, which includes options such as single, married filing jointly, and head of household.
Returns for the 2027 tax year will be filed in 2028. Taxpayers can determine their current taxable income by looking at line 15 of their individual federal income tax return, known as Form 1040. The new figures apply specifically to income earned in 2027.
