Ryleigh Schoonover is set to begin her collegiate basketball career at Fresno State, bringing a decade-plus of high school championship experience to the Pac-12 roster. The former Clovis West standout chose to stay in the Central Valley for her first four years of college, opting to play for the local program rather than leaving the region. Her decision reflects a common path for top local talent, but she arrives with a specific pedigree that distinguishes her from many incoming freshmen.
Schoonover graduated from Clovis West during a 14-year streak of consecutive Central Section titles. That sustained success created an environment where winning was the default expectation. Former Clovis West head coach Craig Campbell noted that the program’s goal was always to remain competitive, stating, "We want to be good every year. We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year." Schoonover internalized that standard, crediting Campbell for preparing her for the intensity of college competition. She described the consistency of performance at both levels by noting, "Everything is the standard."
Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has emphasized the value of Schoonover’s background. He identified her as the best player in the area for the 2026 recruiting class. McCarthy said, "Riley came in and proved that right away." He added that her history in a winning program sets a high baseline for her performance on the college floor. "She played with a very good high school basketball program here, and all they did was win," McCarthy said. "And so, that's the expectation when she sets out on the floor."
Schoonover expressed personal pride in representing the local community in college. She highlighted the unique meaning of playing for a regional school, saying, "To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different." She observed that observers outside the Central Valley often do not fully grasp the significance of that local identity.
The Bulldogs are preparing for their season opener against UC Merced, a contest scheduled to take place in less than two weeks. Schoonover will make her college debut at the Save Mart Center. Campbell believes her development is still in its early stages. He told reporters that the Fresno State staff is excited because Schoonover is "just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them."
The freshman class at Fresno State includes multiple highly rated recruits, but Schoonover’s arrival adds a layer of local continuity to the roster. Her background provides the coaching staff with a player who has already adapted to the pressure of being the best in her region. As the season approaches, the focus shifts to how that high school discipline translates into Pac-12 competition.
