Apple’s laptop lineup has remained static on the processing side for nearly eight months, a gap the company now plans to bridge with a physical redesign rather than a hardware upgrade. The company is scheduled to unveil the new model on October 28 at an event branded "Pro and tell."

Reports indicate the device will not include any performance improvements over the current generation. The machine will rely on the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which first entered the market in early 2026. This decision means the new laptop will offer the same computational speed as the models currently available for purchase.

The primary changes will be structural and visual. The new design is expected to feature a body that is lighter and slightly thinner than its predecessor. The display will switch to OLED technology and will support touch input, a first for the MacBook Pro line. The traditional notch at the top of the screen will be removed in favor of a Dynamic Island cutout.

Apple is reportedly skipping the M6 Pro and M6 Max processors entirely. The company plans to fast-track the M7 Pro and M7 Max chips for release in 2027. This strategic move leaves the redesigned October 2026 model to serve as a transitional device between these two generations of silicon.

Pricing remains the most uncertain variable. Analysts suggest the new design could justify a higher cost, potentially raising the starting price to $2,999. This would require customers to pay more for a machine that does not offer faster processing speeds. While some speculated Apple might keep the price flat to match current M5 models, reports describe that scenario as unlikely given the current memory market conditions.

A C2 cellular modem is also rumored to be included, though this feature is considered less certain than the display and design changes. If accurate, the modem would allow the laptop to connect to mobile networks without a paired smartphone.

Apple has not officially confirmed the specifications or the pricing strategy. The October 28 event will determine whether the reported design changes are real and how the company will market a laptop that prioritizes form over function.
