Pre-orders for Apple's new folding phone opened last Friday, and within roughly a minute, delivery estimates were already stretching into late January. Apple attributed this to what it called "extraordinary" demand for its first foldable device and moved to limit customers to a maximum of two units per customer to combat scalpers.

Supply chain sources now indicate that Apple has increased its shipment targets for the iPhone Duo from 9.7 million to 14 million units over the first 12 months. This significant ramp in production suggests the company expects strong demand to continue, shifting the narrative from potential supply shortages to a manufacturing surge. Earlier delivery estimates given to some customers may be explained by this increase in production volume.

The rapid sellout of pre-orders created immediate questions regarding whether Apple could fulfill orders on time. While extended dates initially suggested a supply constraint, the boost in production targets confirms that the company is scaling up to meet consumer interest. Apple has not publicly commented on the specific supply chain reports, but the increase in shipment goals indicates confidence in the product's market performance.

Customers receiving their devices face a transitional period regarding software compatibility. Early buyers are encountering third-party applications that are not yet optimized for the folding display format. Apple reports that the situation is improving rapidly as developers update their software for the new form factor.

Reviews based on the first week of usage point to app support as a primary concern among users. The hardware also faces criticism regarding the decision to include Touch ID rather than Face ID. Despite these issues, the device has generated significant interest, leading to the current surge in production figures.

Moving forward, Apple is preparing for the next iteration of the device. Reports indicate that prototypes for an iPhone Duo 2 are currently being tested. These next-generation units are equipped with Face ID, addressing one of the primary criticisms leveled at the current model.
