Former President Barack Obama appeared at an Ohio rally on Saturday to campaign for Democratic candidates, criticizing President Donald Trump's second term and the cost of the war with Iran. Obama told the crowd that Trump made a series of bad decisions, including starting a war that was not asked for. He put a $2 trillion figure on the cost of the US-Israel war against Iran.
Obama urged voters to reject the current administration. He said two years of chaos, cruelty, corruption and incompetence have led to a moment where people can say 'Enough is enough.'
The rally also touched on Ohio's gubernatorial race. Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy ran an ad featuring Donna Arthur, the mother of Democrat Amy Acton. In the ad, Arthur disputes her daughter's account of a childhood marked by homelessness and sexual abuse by her stepfather, and tells voters not to support her. Acton says she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother has backed her account of being abused by her stepfather, who died in 2004 and had been charged with rape.
Obama spoke about the ad, saying there is no line Ramaswamy will not cross and no low he will not sink to. He added that he does not know what has happened where standards of behavior are so low that an ad like that can run. Obama said Acton has spoken movingly about her painful childhood and what she has experienced, including abuse, neglect and homelessness.
Obama shared the stage with Acton and former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who is running against Republican Senator Jon Husted. Polls show Democrats with a slight lead in both Ohio races, though the results are expected to be close.
Obama said of Trump: 'After two years of chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence, the likes of which we have not seen in the modern era, you get a chance to say, "Enough is enough."'
