Most iPhones skip iOS 27.1 as Apple targets new Duo
Apple released a new software update exclusively for the iPhone Duo, leaving other models to wait for the upcoming iOS 27.2 release.

Apple’s recent software pushes have typically reached all compatible devices simultaneously. That pattern changed on the night before October 23 when the company sent out iOS 27.1.
The update is available only for the new iPhone Duo. Owners of other iPhone models who check the General section in Settings will see iOS 27.0.1 listed as the current version. Apple bypassed the 27.1 point release for those devices and will move them directly to iOS 27.2.
This approach deviates from standard practice where point releases usually add features to the entire fleet. The decision appears linked to the recent unveiling of the iPhone Duo last month. Many details about the new hardware remained undisclosed until its launch. By avoiding a public beta cycle for 27.1, Apple kept specific software features under wraps until the device became available.
Engineering logistics likely contributed to the split as well. The Duo utilizes custom iOS designs and unique features. Managing these internal changes was reportedly simpler without the added complexity of unrelated updates for other models.
iOS 27.2 has been in beta testing for approximately one month and is scheduled for a general release next week. The update includes Suggested Actions in Messages, a redesigned Apple Music app, and user profiles for Apple TV. Apple Podcasts will feature an overhauled Up Next queue, while FaceTime adds Dual Capture for group calls. Siri AI will also support additional languages in this build.
The split does not leave other iPhone owners behind. When iOS 27.2 arrives, it will include all necessary updates. The 27.1 version was never intended for devices other than the Duo.
