The State Attorney’s Office filed charges against an Israeli lawyer on Monday, marking the formal escalation of a case that began with her arrest by Israel Police and the Shin Bet nearly two and a half weeks ago. The indictment was submitted to the Central District Court in Lod, where prosecutors now seek to keep her in custody until the legal process is complete.
The lawyer faces two main charges: contact with a foreign agent and obstruction of justice. The prosecution stated that the investigation confirmed she engaged with a foreign representative and took steps to hinder the inquiry. A gag order remains in place, limiting public details to a court-approved summary at the request of security officials.
The announcement did not specify the nationality of the foreign agent or the exact nature of their interaction. The court document confirms the lawyer is currently in police custody while awaiting the court’s decision on her detention request.
This indictment arrives as authorities detail a series of recent cases involving alleged Iranian recruitment efforts. In these instances, prosecutors described how intelligence services used social media and messaging apps to approach Israelis. Offers included payments for tasks such as photography, information gathering, and threats against targets.
In April, two young Israelis were indicted for similar conduct. The primary defendant was contacted through a Telegram group and promised money for assignments. A second defendant allegedly created forged documents claiming to contain classified plans for attacks on Iran by Israeli and US forces.
Earlier this year, the Jerusalem District Court handed down a three-year prison sentence to Elimelech Stern. He was convicted of contacting an Iranian intelligence operative and conspiring to threaten. His assignments were compensated with cryptocurrency payments.
