John Legend has released his new studio album, titled "Muse." The project marks a major shift in his production process, as Pharrell took over the helm for the entire record. Legend described the collaboration as a new experience that pushed him to alter his performance style.
The singer explained that Pharrell encouraged a different delivery on specific songs. On the track "Fireflies," Legend said he was directed to speak rather than sing the verses. He described this approach as oratory, shifting the focus from melodic lines to spoken word.
This is not the first time Legend has integrated hip-hop elements into his work. He noted that working with hip-hop producers has been a consistent part of his career. He cited past collaborations with Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Rick Ross as evidence of this long-standing connection.
Jay-Z told Legend that he serves as a specific voice for hip-hop artists. Legend recalled the rapper approaching him to say, "You're our voice." He added that rappers frequently invite him to their records when they believe he can add a unique element to the music.
Beyond recording, Legend is currently writing for the Broadway production of "Imitation of Life." He highlighted the challenge of centering the character Delilah, a Black woman, in the storytelling. He noted that this character has not held that central position in previous versions of the story.
Legend aims to keep his creative process challenging. He stated that he wants every project to be his best work. This goal drives him to avoid resting on past achievements and to seek out new avenues for inspiration.
The album is available to listeners now. Legend's next major step involves completing the score for the Broadway show. He continues to balance these two distinct creative outlets simultaneously.
