Danny Kushmaro introduces his nightly election segment by describing the 2026 vote as the most fateful in Israeli history. This phrasing has become a common refrain among campaign leaders, with many declaring the upcoming ballot more critical than any precedent. Kushmaro argues that this romanticization of the current moment ignores the consistent perception that every election carries unique weight.

The labeling of elections as existential matters transforms standard political competition into a struggle for national survival. When the conflict between pro-Netanyahu and anti-Netanyahu blocs is framed as a life-or-death issue, defeat is no longer viewed as a correctable setback. Instead, the losing side may regard the outcome as a national crisis that is difficult to accept, making the transition of power more contentious.

This pattern has been evident since Naftali Bennett formed a government in 2021. Before that administration was sworn in, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized its creation as the greatest election fraud. Although the term referred to broken campaign promises rather than stolen ballots, the message cast the new government as illegitimate. The opposition subsequently worked to dismantle the Bennett cabinet, often voting against legislation it supported to weaken the coalition’s slim majority.

In May 2022, Likud MK Miri Regev defended voting against measures benefiting soldiers and vulnerable groups. She stated that the overriding objective was to topple the coalition, prioritizing government collapse over specific policy support. The Bennett government spent much of its short tenure fighting for survival in the Knesset.

After Netanyahu won the 2022 election and formed a hard-right government, Yair Lapid conceded defeat and arranged an orderly handover. However, language of illegitimacy resurfaced during the judicial overhaul protests. In April 2023, former Shin Bet director Yuval Diskin addressed a massive demonstration in Tel Aviv. He stated that while the government had been elected legally, it was morally illegitimate due to its appalling composition and reprehensible actions.

The recurrence of these narratives suggests that the difficulty in accepting electoral outcomes is a structural issue rather than a unique feature of the 2026 cycle. Campaign leaders continue to frame the October vote as a defining moment, a tactic that Kushmaro believes distorts the political landscape by implying that previous elections lacked comparable historical significance.

The next scheduled milestone is the election itself, which will determine the composition of the new Knesset. Campaign leaders from both blocs are expected to maintain their rhetoric of historical urgency until the polls close.
