The central tension in the response to Thursday's earthquake in northern Tibet is the race between collapsing infrastructure and worsening weather. A magnitude 7 quake struck the region at 10:33 p.m. local time, killing at least 16 people and injuring 46 others. The hardest hit area was Nagqu, where officials reported that 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds collapsed.

Rescue efforts are currently strained by the scale of the damage and the remoteness of the location. More than 1,600 personnel from the local county have been deployed to the site. Officials confirmed that 11 of the injured are in serious condition, while the other 35 have minor injuries. Search and rescue teams are still working through the rubble as of Friday.

Logistical challenges have compounded the emergency. Xinhua reported that communication lines are down in parts of the region. Local railway authorities halted train traffic through the affected zone to ensure safety. Additionally, rockfalls forced the closure of a section of National Highway 317. Currently, only emergency, rescue, and official support vehicles are permitted to pass while crews clear the debris.

Relief supplies have begun arriving at the disaster zone. The shipment includes 1,000 prefabricated housing units, approximately 3,000 tents and folding beds, flashlights, and winter clothing. These items are critical as intermittent snow is forecast for the next three days, which could slow down recovery operations.

The U.S. Geological Survey placed the earthquake's epicenter 191 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu. It occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area. Nagqu is located more than 300 kilometers north of Lhasa, the regional capital. CCTV described the event as the largest earthquake in the region in five years.
