Sony Pictures has confirmed that Jumanji: Open World will hit theaters on December 25. The release date positions the adventure film directly against a heavy competition slate. Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are scheduled for mid-December, creating a crowded box office environment for the holiday season.

Jake Kasdan returns as director for this third entry. He previously led the 2017 film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which grossed more than $960 million worldwide. His 2019 follow-up, The Next Level, also performed well at the box office. The new trailer highlights a twist that references the 1995 original while continuing the body-swapping premise that defined the recent installments.

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are back in their roles. The official synopsis describes the movie as the final part of the trilogy. In this story, the game escapes its video game console and spreads its chaos into the real world, moving beyond the jungle setting of the previous two films.

Production on this third movie faced delays. Work stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic and restarted in 2024. The need for a sequel was hinted at in the end credits of The Next Level. In that scene, Lamorne Morris plays a repairman who visits Alex Wolff’s character. He accidentally activates a broken console, signaling the return of the game.

A mystery from the previous film may be addressed in the new release. In 2019, Johnson revealed that the villain Jurgen the Brutal, played by Rory McCann, is the avatar of another real-world player. This detail adds a layer of complexity to the cast's dynamic as they face the new challenges in the real world.
