Moonshot AI’s New Model Narrows Gap with Industry Leaders

A significant price cut and performance jump allow the latest Kimi release to challenge top-tier proprietary systems in agentic and coding tasks.

Moonshot AI has positioned its latest reasoning model, Kimi K3.1 Pro, as a direct competitor to the region's leading artificial intelligence systems. The release lands at the fourth spot on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with a score of 55, placing it within a three-point margin of the top proprietary models. This advancement marks a notable shift in the competitive landscape for Southeast-based technology firms seeking high-performance AI solutions.

The most immediate impact of the release is a substantial reduction in operational costs. While the model retains the 2.8 trillion total parameter structure of its predecessor, the API pricing has been lowered by 33 percent. Input costs have dropped to $2 per million tokens, output costs to $10, and cache hits to $0.20. This price adjustment makes the model more accessible for enterprise integration while maintaining high performance metrics.

Performance improvements are most evident in agentic capabilities. On the GDPval-AA benchmark, the new model achieves an Elo rating of 1,846, a 312-point increase over the previous version. It also records a 65.7 percent score on Terminal-Bench 4.0, surpassing several competing models. These results indicate a marked enhancement in the model's ability to execute complex, multi-step tasks autonomously.

Specialized technical capabilities have also seen refinement, particularly in 3D modeling and coding. The system can interact directly with game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine, and it scores 92.7 percent on the BenchCAD benchmark when utilizing external tools. Additionally, the company has introduced a '3D Make' feature that allows users to preview and export models, highlighting a push toward practical creative applications.

Contextually, Moonshot AI has taken deliberate steps to manage the model's offensive cybersecurity capabilities. For the open-weights release planned for November 2026, cyber-related data was removed from the training corpus. This measure reduces the model's ability to solve specific vulnerability tasks from 90.5 percent to 81.0 percent, aiming to balance offensive potential with defensive utility in software auditing.

The outlook suggests a shrinking distinction between open and proprietary AI models. If the model weights are released as scheduled, Kimi K3.1 Pro would become the highest-scoring open-weights model available. This would narrow the performance gap between the two categories to just three points, potentially altering the long-term strategic decisions of developers and enterprises in the region.
