Greensboro residents planning for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 27 will find a mix of open and closed city services, with outdoor amenities largely available and most offices shut for the day.

City parks, trails and greenways will remain open, which should suit those hoping to spend the long weekend outdoors if the weather cooperates. Gillespie Golf Course will keep its normal schedule, and tee times can be booked by calling 336-373-5850.

Among the lakes, Lake Brandt and Lake Townsend will be open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Lake Higgins, however, will be closed.

Families can look forward to the start of the summer swim season. City pools and spraygrounds are scheduled to open Saturday, May 25, and will also operate on May 26 and May 27. City officials noted that the openings are "pending the successful completion of Guilford County Health Department inspections and permitting."

Many indoor facilities will close for the holiday. These include the Parks and Recreation Department's administrative offices, recreation centers, the Greensboro Sportsplex, Smith Active Adult Center, Trotter Active Adult Center, Xperience @ Caldcleugh, the Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion at Barber Park, and the Greensboro Youth Council. City offices will also be closed on May 27, as will the Greensboro Public Libraries, the Greensboro History Museum and the Greensboro Cultural Center.

Residents should also expect changes to waste services. There will be no trash or recycling collection on Memorial Day. Pickups normally made on Monday will take place Tuesday, May 28, and Tuesday's collections will move to Wednesday, May 29. All other collection dates will stay the same. The White Street Landfill and Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, May 27.

Public transportation will continue on a reduced basis. The Greensboro Transit Authority will run a Saturday schedule, with hourly service from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Route 11 will not serve the Jamestown campus of GTCC. Access GSO will likewise provide service on a Saturday schedule from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Emergency water and sewer services will remain available, since they operate around the clock every day of the week. Water customers who experience a water or sewer problem can call 336-373-2489 and follow the prompts to reach the Water Resources dispatcher.
